The Level 3 NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety is intended for those whose job role encompasses the area of general health and safety practice, and is suitable for those new to a health and safety role, or mangers who wish to formalise their knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace.

As the NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is work-based, and involves the collection of evidence from your normal day-to-day activities, candidates must be in a job role that allows them to collect and provide this. This will probably be individuals who have already acquired some experience, and candidates must be in a health and safety managerial position, where they are able to influence the policy and practice of their organisation.



Programme Structure


NEBOSH Exams

There are five individual mandatory units and an additional two units from a choice that must be completed to obtain the overall qualification:

Mandatory Units:
  • HSS1 - Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
  • HSS2 - Develop procedures to safely control work operations
  • HSS3 - Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
  • HSS4 - Promote a health and safety culture within the workplace
  • HSS6 - Conduct a health and safety assessment of a workplace

In addition to the mandatory units above, candidates must choose two units from the following selection:

Elective Units:
  • HSS5 - Investigate and evaluate incidents and complaints in the workplace
  • HSS7 - Make sure your actions at work aim to protect the environment
  • HSS8 - Review health and safety procedures in workplaces
  • HSS9 - Supervise the health, safety and welfare of a learner in the workplace

The NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is a highly practical programme, and one of our team of personal NVQ advisors/assessors will assist you to build a portfolio of work-based evidence which meets the requirements of City & Guilds.

Our approach is one-to-one, and we structure our programme of assistance to suit your needs as a busy health and safety practitioner, using our unique secure website, known as an ePortfolio, to build your portfolio of work evidence. Our ePortfolio system allows candidates to complete and present their portfolio of evidence online using our tailored City & Guilds-approved system. Candidates can study when they want, where they want, with no bulky paper-based portfolios to manage, store or send through the post. Your portfolio is based online, accessible via an internet browser.

The system is intuitive to use with minimal training required, and support as needed from our health and safety NVQ assessors/advisors. Candidates can track their own progress at all times, having instant access to course materials and resources. Candidates can also easily upload evidence into their e-portfolio and communicate with their NVQ assessor/advisor effectively and easily.

NVQ Programme Support


NVQ programme support

Our health and safety consultants are qualified and experienced professionals with a background in vocational training and assessment. All consultants hold Graduate or Chartered Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).

You will have an allocated personal NVQ advisor/assessor who will work with you to collect your portfolio of evidence. They will be your dedicated point of contact, available by telephone, email or video conference. Our team are also available for personal review sessions at our Nottingham office.



Entry Requirements


Health and Safety NVQ Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for the NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice; however candidates must be in a role that allows them to collect evidence which meets the requirements of City & Guilds.

We also need written confirmation (on company letterhead) from your employer giving permission for you to use company documents for educational purposes only, in accordance with the Data Protection Act.

Entry dates are flexible, and you can enrol on the programme at any point in the year. Contact with your advisor/assessor will be flexible via e-mail, telephone, video conference or at open days scheduled throughout the year. This is principally a distance learning type approach with no need to attend specific dates, making it ideal for those who need to fit their studies around their working hours.



Enhanced Learning Credits


NEBOSH General Certificate ELCAS (ELC) Funding

Service personnel who qualify for Enhanced Learning Credits can use them towards enrolling on an NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

The NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is a highly flexible programme and can be completed in a time period to suit candidates. Normally this will be around six months but really depends upon the amount of time each candidate can contribute. As a minimum time period, certification cannot be claimed until at least ten weeks after registration.

Upon completion of the NVQ requirements, candidates will be awarded an official City and Guilds accredited NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice. A separate certificate will detail all individual units completed as part of the overall health and safety NVQ programme.

The cost of the NVQ 5 health and safety qualification is £1,116.00 + vat. This price includes the registration fee with City & Guilds, tutor support for 12 months, and all certification costs.

NVQ Diploma Level 5 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice

The NVQ Level 5 in Occupational Health and Safety Practice is specific to people who have an autonomous role in their organisation for managing health and safety policy and practice. This health and safety qualification has been accredited on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) at Level 5 and is worth 108 credits. Many universities will accept this qualification as suitable entry requirements for admission to undergraduate and postgraduate study in health and safety.

There are eleven mandatory units in the programme structure plus six elective units comprising a choice of topics, one of which (Unit 611) must be completed to gain IOSH graduate membership recognition.
